April 11th Program
We are happy to welcome Karen Montgomery, owner of The Quilt Company in Allison Park.  Karen is bringing her new fabric line to show us.  (I think she will have some fabric for us to purchase, so be prepared to do so.)

Fabric Exchange
Also at the April program, bring 2 fat quarters of Christmas fabric.  We will be exchanging them and making a table runner for the November meeting.

March’s Block Lotto
Rose Lawton was the lucky winner of the 20 blocks of flowers from March.

March’s Program
Thanks to Susan Catanzarito for the interesting presentation on the Underground Railroad quilts.

Secret Sisters
Our guild shares the same name with the guild that meets in the mornings.  It is reported that when organizing, some members wanted to meet in the day and some at night.  So, the groups took the same name, but remained separate functioning bodies.
The officers decided it would be nice to have some joint activities throughout the year.
The first activity is an optional one that will pair members from each group as Secret Sisters.  Also planned is a combined picnic this summer.
More information will be coming about the Secret Sister program at the next meeting.

June Block Lotto Block
The theme for the June Block Lotto is “Baskets”.  The background for the block should be white.  Use 30s fabrics.

  General rules are:
1.  Blocks must be made from quilt shop quality fabrics and the fabrics must be prewashed.
2. Finished size of block must equal 12.5”.
3. No member can win the lotto more than once in a calendar year.
4. Once someone wins she must participate in the block lotto until the year ends.  This only makes it fair to everyone participating.
5. An individual receives a chance to win the lotto with every block she enters.  Enter 1 block get 1 chance, enter 3 blocks get 3 chances, etc.
6. Blocks will be turned in to a member of the program committee prior to the beginning of the meeting.
7. Remember—make this like you are making this for yourself or your best friend.  Blocks can be pieced or appliqued.
If you have questions call a member of the program committee.

Mark Lipinski

This June 24th and 25th we have invited Mark Lipinski to come to New Wilmington to give a lecture and teach a workshop.  Mark is an entertaining personality who has done an amazing number of jobs over the years but currently is involved in designing quilts, teaching workshops and producing a magazine.  A native of Pittsburgh, Mark now lives in New Jersey.
Our guild is partnering with the morning guild to sponsor Mark.  For our guilds, Mark is creating an exclusive pattern he’s calling “Where The Corners Meet”.  He is giving us the rights to use the pattern as we choose.
He will be giving a lecture on Friday, June 24th at 7:00
p.m. at the New Wilmington Masonic Lodge (formerly the Grange Hall) on High St.  Lecture tickets are $5 and 50 will be available to our guild at the April meeting.
On Saturday, June 25th, Mark will be conducting a workshop also at the Masonic Lodge for 30 people.  Our guild will have 15 tickets available to our members at the April meeting.  The workshop cost is $40.
Guild members will be able to purchase tickets first.  If there are any left, the other guild will have the opportunity to purchase them.  If there are any left after that, the general public will be able to purchase tickets at The Quilting Bee.  Any questions about the tickets, call The Quilting Bee at 724-946-8566.
If you want to attend either of these programs, bring cash or a check to the April meeting.

Quilts 2005   -   By Joanna Baranek

On Saturday, March 19, I attended “Quilts 2005”, the 14th annual Quilt Show at Lake Farmpark in Kirtland, Ohio. There were over 200 quilts to see, including works by featured artists Sue Nickels and Linda Carlson. I have been to this show in years past, and have come to expect beautiful, creative, and colorful quilts—I was not disappointed. Just when I thought I’d seen the prettiest quilt there, I’d turn a corner and see one even prettier.
The work of the featured artists was astounding, especially, I think, of Linda Carlson, whose use of color, and beautifully done hand appliqué and quilting took my breath away. Sue Nickels work was also outstanding, with fun folk-artsy quilts done with bright colors and humor. It was easy to see why these two quilters have won national acclaim.
One of the things I like about this show is the wide diversity of entrants. Everybody from beginners to professionals enter their work for display. I can get inspired as much from someone’s first attempt, to the most expertly executed work. There was a fun display of quilts made from children’s handprints on fabric, and even a couple of rescued antique embroidered quilts that had interesting stories. All in all, an enjoyable afternoon—topped off by a visit to Remembrances Quilt Shop in Chesterland on the way home.
If you ever get a chance to visit this show, which always runs mid-February to mid-March, take it. It’s well worth the $6.00 admission.

Mystery Quilt

Preparations: Shopping and Gathering Fabrics
Finished quilt size approximately 39” square
Block size 12”
Seam allowance 1/4”
The mystery looks best using blacks and brights.  Backgrounds are all solid black.  The brights can be solid brights, batiks, marbles, etc.  One of the brights needs to be a bright yello/gold.  There will be 4 other brights in the quilt and they can be your choice.  You can play with the brights if you like and come up with something a little different...like all warm brights or all cool brights.  Or you can even use from the same color family for your brights...such as all bright purples or all bright blues.  Fabric requirements are approximate, but should yield you a little more than necessary to be safe.

You can see Mark Lipinski on Simply Quilts (HGTV) April 4th.
