August Meeting
August 10th
Program
Our annual picnic is scheduled for August 10th.  It will be held at the New Wilmington Park in the picnic building.  We will gather at 6 and eat at 6:30 p.m.
Chicken and drinks will be provided; you bring a covered dish and your table service.  Make several copies of your recipe and we will sell them for .25 each.  Be sure to bring your show and tells.
The park is just a few blocks south of the Sky Bank building.  If you come into town from the north, turn right (west) at the traffic light beside the Tavern (Neshannock Ave. Rt. 208) and turn left (south) at the blinker light (New Castle St. Rt. 158, a funeral home and Haines Realty on the right, gas station on the left).  The park is just a couple blocks on your left.  When you will see the pool the drive will be just beyond that.  The picnic is in the only other building there.

September meeting
Can it be that time again?  September brings our annual Shop Owners Night.  Bring your money and friends and spread the news that everyone is welcome to come and check out what our shop owners have to show you.
It will be held at the New Wilmington Presbyterian Church on Market St. at 7 p.m.
This year we will not have to set up and take down the tables; however, we will need volunteers to help shop owners carry in and carry out their things.  So, please decide to come early or stay late to help.

Loss of a member
We were sorry to learn of the death of one of our members, Mary Simmons.  The guild placed a Pat Knoechel quilt book in the Grove City Library in her memory.

August Block Lotto

The theme for the August Block Lotto is “Animals”. The colors should be brights and the background for the block should be white or white on white.

General rules are:
1.  Blocks must be made from quilt shop quality fabrics and the fabrics must be prewashed.
2. Finished size of block must equal 12.5”.
3. No member can win the lotto more than once in a calendar year.
4. Once someone wins she must participate in the block lotto until the year ends.  This only makes it fair to everyone participating.
5. An individual receives a chance to win the lotto with every block she enters.  Enter 1 block get 1 chance, enter 3 blocks get 3 chances, etc.
6. Blocks will be turned in to a member of the program committee prior to the beginning of the meeting.
7. Remember—make this like you are making this for yourself or your best friend.  Blocks can be pieced or appliqued.
If you have questions call a member of the program committee.

June and July’s programs
In June we enjoyed Pat Knoechel’s presentation of her new designs.
We also hosted Mark Lipinski for a lecture and workshop.  Not only was Mark’s presentations well received, we sold all our tickets and the entire expenditure to our guild and the
a.m. guild was $12 each!
We also thank everyone who provided cookies for Pat Knoechel’s presentation and for the reception after Mark’s lecture.
In July we welcomed Terry Detzel from her shop in Meadville to demonstrate the new Bernina Aurora 440 sewing machine with the embroidery component and the stitch regulator.

A Night and A Day with Mark Lipinski
by  Jean Wanchick

Spending an evening and a whole day with a character like Mark Lipinski gives one’s laugh muscles a real workout.  From outrageous to “why can’t I think funny like that?”, Mark was sheer entertainment and fun.
He arrived on Friday, June 24th to a full house at the Masonic Lodge.  A “non-traditional” lecturer (I’m sure there are other ways to describe him, but I can’t think of another), Mark provided us with an entertaining evening where we learned about Mark’s life and how he became a quilter amid numerous hints about making quilting easier.  His philosophies of bunching up quilts to store them and just throwing them around was a little hard for many of us to adopt; however most of his hints were good ideas and very “do-able”.
The next morning the workshop began at 9 a.m. in the basement of the lodge.  Twenty-nine women arrived to participate in the workshop.  We each received the “clues” to a mystery quilt and started sewing.  Meanwhile, Mark gave hints, did demonstrations when we reached certain points in the construction, provided clues to a guessing game...the winners of which received a gift, and generally entertained us with his wit.
He vowed to cure us of our phobias of curves by showing us three different ways to make the blocks with curves in them and I think he did that.  Needless to say, the atmosphere was very casual and jovial.  Mark did a good job of keeping things going and getting us to have fun.  (I’ll always be “proud” to have impressed him by knowing Whoopie Goldberg’s real name.)
We took some time for lunch and then went back to work.  Several people were able to get their squares done and started working on how they would put them together.  Many of us didn’t finish all our squares (but will do so soon, we promise).
All in all, the general consensus was that we had fun and learned something while we got to visit with each other and Mark.  I’d give Mark high marks for providing us with a good day of sewing and laughing.
[Watch for news of Mark’s new magazine due out in January.]
