Annual Picnic and Challenge Block
It's time once again to celebrate summer with our annual picnic. We'll be at the New Wilmington park shelter, directly across from the swimming pool and start eating at 6 p.m.
FOOD: Fried chicken and drinks will be provided, you bring table service, covered dish, 5 copies of your recipe and plenty of quarters. The recipes will be available for purchase for $.25 each.
CHALLENGE BLOCK: Also, bring your challenge block in a brown bag no name on the bag or block. We will be voting on our favorites.
FUN: Some of our "Red Hatters" suggested that we wear purple clothing and top it off with a red hat! This sounds like it could be fun...so, find something purple to wear and get something red for your head (it could be anything from a hat to bandana, or headband with flowers). For those under 50 years of age...wear lavender and pink.
Could someone with the poem please bring it to read for the group?
WE LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING YOU IN AUGUST!
Irene Hoffman
Irene has been quilting so long that she doesn't remember when she started. She taught herself to quilt and prefers the older patterns and types of quilts. The guild has influenced her most. She has taken piecing and lap quilting classes. Her stash includes many left over pieces from the 20 or so quilts she has made. While she's not doing much quilting now she recommends that we sign our quilts in permanent marker somewhere on the quilt...labels can be taken off if stolen.
Sandy Lord
Sandy made her first quilt at 23an Ohio Star. She made her second and third quilts, Grandmother's fan, at 34. She made quilted clothes at 48 and has been quilting ever since. She learned to quilt by trial and error until she took her first class (Mariners Compass); unfortunately, no one told her that it was NOT for beginners, but she did finish the quilt. Since then she has taken classes in hand and machine quilting and landscape free design.
True to form, Sandy hasn't met a pattern or quilt she doesn't like. She has been influenced by guild members and guest speakers, but her fine arts background and business have had the biggest influence on her quilting.
Her stash has a LOT of fabric, each one prettier than the next. She has made 30+quilts in addition to quilted clothes.
Sandy is the owner of The Gallery in Mercer. She does professional calligraphy, watercolor and custom picture framing. She goes to about 10 shows a year where she offers handmade jackets, vests, pillows and lap quilts for sale. With all that when does she have time to quilt? "When I'm not in the shopin the car (when she's not driving), at appointments, etc." That can be verified..she can be seen at Mercer Community Band Concerts doing handwork!
Her tip to other quilters? "Don't be afraid to try...a favorite quote, 'The world would be very silent if only the best bird sang.' No matter what we make, it may not be the best but it adds color and love to our world and as a gift, joy to someone else's."

New Start Time for regular meetings:
At our July meeting the group voted to have
meetings start at 7 p.m. instead of 7:30. The
7:00 start time will begin with the September
meeting (Shop Owners night).
Service Project: We are making quilts for Children's Hospital this summer. Our first work day was July 9. Over 10 members got together that day for a productive day of sewing. We will have a second work day on Saturday, August 23. It will also be at Trinity Presbyterian Church in Mercer from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Bring a brown bag lunch, pattern, your machine, fabric and sewing supplies. The guild will provide drinks. Quilts need to be at least 36" x36" or crib size, so, check your fabrics and simple patterns. They will be given to children newborn through late teens. The church (110 East Market St.) is on the East side of the Courthouse on Rt. 58 on way to Grove City. Park out front or in the rear of the church. For more information call Jean Wanchick.
For those interested but not signed up, please call Mary Ann. We need to know about how many are coming so we'll know how many tables to have set up.
Many thanks to Brenda Leone for teaching us to do flower pounding. We had a great time at our July meeting.
