July Program
Christmas In July
July’s program will be all about Christmas—the perfect time to start those Christmas projects.
We will have demonstrations of unique gifts to make.
There will also be a Block Lotto.
For every patch you turn in at the July meeting, you have a chance to win a group of patches.
The patch should measure
9 1/2 “ and be a star. The background is to be a white on white fabric and the star should be dark green or a dark red/burgundy or a combination of the two colors. A small accent color may be added to the red and green.
Come prepared for some new Christmas ideas and the possibility of winning enough blocks to make a Christmas quilt.
Last month
Thanks to all who attended Pat Knoechel’s trunk show. She had so many beautiful quilts it was inspiring to see. Hard to believe that she says she’s such a “slow sewer”. Thanks also to everyone who made purchases. That support makes it possible for Pat to come each year and not charge us a fee.
Remember to...
Pick up additions to the 2006 Membership Directory at the July meeting.
2006 Quilt Challenge
Make a greeting card quilt the size of a fat quarter, 18 x 22.
You may use any theme that would be an appropriate greeting, such as a birthday or holiday.
The quilt is to be completed and should have a sleeve so that you can use it as a wall hanging.
The challenge is due at the August picnic and a People's Choice Award will be given.
Personal Challenge
Don’t forget to sign up to have a some part of a UFO completed by the November meeting.
The Cotton Theory
Our guild is sponsoring a weekend devoted to a new technique called the Cotton Theory (because it was developed by a quilter named Betty Cotton). Judy Fenton from Millcreek Sew ’n Vac will be doing a trunk show and lecture on Friday, September 29th at 7 p.m. at the Masonic Lodge in New Wilmington. The cost is $3.
On Saturday, September 30, she will be teaching at two workshops. You may sign up for either the morning (9 to noon) or the afternoon (1 to 4). The cost which includes the complete kit is $25. In addition, you will need to purchase an adhesive guide for about $6 at the workshop.
You will learn every step of the theory including binding and split seam binding (reversible). There is no handwork at all. The only warning is that your sewing machine must zigzag.
You may pay for a space at the workshop and lecture at the next guild meeting or at the Quilting Bee.

Focus On ...
We welcomed seven new members to the guild. Stop and talk to them at the next meeting. Another new member is:
Jane Armstrong
Jane started quilting in 1987 with a class at the community college. Since then she has taken more classes including applique, colorwash with Deidre Amsden, trapunto, inking labels with Susan McKelvey, silk ribbon with Jeni Buechel, Baltimore Album with Elly Sienkiewicz and Kaleidoscope with Paula Nadelstern.
Her favorites are Baltimore Album and silk ribbon embroidery. Jane’s quilting has been influenced most by Elly Sienkiewicz, Jeni Buechel and Japanese quilt magazines.
In her stash we would find jewel tones, hand dyed, ribbons, buttons and embellishments. Jane quilts on weekends and has made about 20 quilts. She works for human resources at the 911th Airlift Wing in Coraopolis.
Jane’s advice to us: Don’t be afraid of color. Not everything has to match.
