February 2003 Program Tuesday, February 11th, 7:30 p.m.
Scrap Bag:  In February we will be making scrap bags.  They are handy to have beside you at your sewing table or ironing board.  Instruction sheets were handed out at the January meeting, contact Jean Wanchick if you didn't get one or get the instructions from the website.  Before the meeting you need to sew the 17" and 13" pieces to their respective linings and make the sand bag.
Bringing sewing machines are Martina Holliday, Diana Russell, Mary Ann Rask, Janet Orga, Mary Wike and Jean Wanchick.

Also bring $5 to sign up for UFO day March 22  (money will be used for lunch).

Last Month's Program
We had fun in January playing bingo with fat quarter prizes.  There were also many wonderful quilts for show and tell.  What talented people we have! The treasurer reports a balance of $835.57.  We still need dues from 13 people.  Please bring your dues in an envelope with your name on it; Marilyn will be able to keep better track of who gives her money.

White Chocolate Popcorn from Mary Ann Snyder
Melt a generous 1/2 pound of white chocolate disks or well-broken chunks.  Can be microwaved at 1/2 power until smooth.  Pour chocolate over a 7.5 oz. Bag of Snyders Hauless Popcorn (it's all ready popped).
Stir until all popcorn is coated.  Dump onto wax paper in a single layer.  Let stand for about an hour then store in airtight container.  Enjoy.

Marilyn Michael
Marilyn joined this guild when it was only a few months old in 1989.  I've been in awe of Marilyn's work since my first visit to the guild.  Her precise work is a joy to see and her miniatures are awe inspiring.   A sewer since high school, Marilyn taught herself to quilt in 1974 when she purchased a kit.  It wasn't a beginners kit eitherit was an applique quilt!  Today, Marilyn likes to machine piece more than applique because it is faster.  She has taken numerous workshops through her guilds and can't really pin down one kind of quilt over another as a preference.  She has done a lot of miniature quilts but really enjoys all the new ideas and quilts that come out in magazines and books and workshops.
Marilyn has made about 6 full sized quilts and about a dozen twin or smaller.  "Lots" describes the number of miniatures and wall hangings that she has completed.  She likes to sew a little bit every day and has several projects going at the same time.  She has lots of UFOs.  Her fabric stash has mostly country colors like red, blue, beige, tans, tone on tones, medium and darks.
Marilyn's advice to other quilters?  Try all kinds of techniques and kinds of quilts, but if you are more comfortable with a particular style don't feel bad about staying with it.

Martina Holliday
Martina, a newer member, started quilting when she was in 7th or 8th grade.   She already was sewing Barbie doll clothes and one day started making quilts.  She is primarily a self-taught quilter who used to get help from the clerks at the old Joann fabrics store when it was in the mall.  She has taken a few classes but prefers to figure out patterns at home when she's alone.
Anyone who has seen Martina's work will realize that "traditional" just doesn't describe her work.  She loves wild colors and patterns.  She admits that if everyone is doing something one way, she'll do it a different way.  If we looked at her stash we'd find lots of batiks that she is collecting, blacks and whites, 30s reproductions, feed sacks and 70s flea market fabrics.  Martina's entire basement is devoted to her workroomlucky woman!  She is an organized person and has her fabrics separated by color and type and her other supplies in clearly labeled plastic shoe boxes.  She is also disciplined she uses an egg timer to "allow" herself 15 minutes of sewing (she takes more time when her schedule allows), but she sews everyday.  (She also uses the egg timer to limit the time she spends on her computer designing and playing with the design program.)  She has no idea how many quilts she has made and has given most of them away to friends and family.  She says she started putting a label on them in the last few years and may start keeping track of her products.
Martina's advice is to move out of your comfort zone and try something new.  She also thinks we should break the rules and do what we want rather than following a certain tradition in quilting if we want to.  I'm certainly glad that she has used that philosophy in her work.  I can't wait to see what she'll do next.
