$$$ Dues Due$$$  - Bring your dues for the year to the January meeting.  Put $12 in an envelope with your name on the front.  Marilyn will be able to process it and give you your guild card by our next meeting.

Mailing Envelopes -  If you didn’t bring your self-addresses, stamped, business sized mailing envelopes to the December meeting, be sure to bring them in January.

Member Directory  -  Do you have any changes to your directory information?  If so, please give Jean the information at the January meeting or call or email her.  The directory will be available at the February meeting.  Please note, we will assume if you haven’t paid your dues by January that you will not be a member of the guild for the 2004 year.

Sewing Day  -  Our first sewing day is scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 17th from 9 to 3 at the Trinity Church in Mercer.  The project is a Flip and Stitch Quilt.  A non-refundable $5 deposit is required and will be used to purchase lunch.  The following materials will be needed:
machinerotary mat and cutter
ruler (16 x 18)  square up ruler
scissorsseam ripper
walking footmarking pen
1010” squares of main fabric #1 for front
     no directional fabric
1010” squares of main fabric #2 for back
     no directional fabric
121/4 yd. pieces cut into 1 1/2” strips to coordinate with front and back.  Six fabrics for each side is nice to coordinate for each side
1310” squares of thermolam (this works best..no fusible)
1 yd. Coordinating fabric for sashing for each side (total 2 yds)
1/2 yd. Fabric for binding that will coordinate with both of the main fabrics on EACH side.
This is for a lap quilt approx. 37 x 46.  If you want to make it larger, you’ll have to calculate the additional fabric.
Questions about the project should be directed to Harriet Mason.

??Do we as a guild or a person wish to do a quilt for the Mercer Chamber?  We brought that up at the last meeting and need to make a decision about it at the coming meeting.

**Be prepared to make a personal challenge: make a UFO pledge that will be completed by the  October meeting.  Write it down with your name and turn it in at the January meeting.

Jean Wanchick
Jean’s grandmother let her sew anytime she wanted to as a child and she made a lot of her clothes from high school on but never got into quilting.  About four years ago she took a sampler class at Eileen Datt’s shop with Louise Smith.  That class was done the “old fashioned way” - no rotary cutters!  The class stretched over Lent and Jean gave up impatience during that time. (Well, she tried to give up being impatient…)  That July Jean started attending the Where the Corners Meet Quilt Guild and started taking classes like  modern geometrics, miniatures, machine quilting and an on -  going, monthly Log Cabin class.  Each were enjoyed for different reasons.
Jean likes all kinds of patterns but leans toward the traditional ones that have secondary patterns.  A look at her finished pieces show a definite trend toward burgundy even though blue and green is her favorite color combination.  Just about everyone with whom she’s come into contact has influenced her.  The biggest influence is the meticulous habits that she sees quilters use to approach their work.  Jean has described herself as a “slap dash” kind of person and quilting has changed that characteristic at least with sewing.
Her fabric stash has taken on a life of its own.  Large tubs of fabrics are sorted by color, smaller tubs contain specialty fabrics and all have been moved to the family room because of the number of tubs.  The family kittens love running and climbing on the tubs, so they provide two purposes  -  storage and climbing walls.
She has completed 5 full size quilts, 5 or 6 baby quilts and numerous wall hangings.  Jean is trying to develop a systematic approach to quilting, but thinks that it will never happen...she doesn’t quilt everyday consistently but wants to.  Since she is a night owl she’d like to sew into the night, but other family members who are asleep would be affected (remember her “singing” machine?).  Her tip to others:  find something new in every project whether it’s color choices, technique or pattern.
