Pat Johnson
Pat started quilting about 20 years ago.  She took a sampler class at Kathy Blair’s in 1983 to make a sampler quilt for her daughter’s graduation.  Since then, she’s taken other sampler classes, machine and hand quilting, slash & stack, and her favorite, watercolor.
Pat’s favorite types of quilts are traditional.  Her grandmother influenced her the most.  She made crazy quilts to cover her dad’s navy blankets and also patchwork to use up scraps.  Pat’s stash has a lot of homespuns.  She’s made about 7 full sized, 10 baby, and 5 lap quilts and numerous wall hangings.
Pat squeezes in quilting between working as a teacher’s aide at George Junior and working 3 nights a week at Walmart.  Her advice for other quilters is to have a friend who also loves to quilt.  [That way] you will inspire each other and have great company for road trips to see our quilt shops.

Mary Lou Townley
About 10 years ago Mary Lou started quilting.  While she’s taken a few classes (stack & wack, flowers in a basket and hand quilting), she’s basically self-taught.  She loves all types of patterns and wants to try one with Civil War Reproduction fabrics.  She’s been influenced by friends, books, magazine articles and guild projects.
Mary Lou’s stash is in over 20 containers but she thinks that there are more blue fabrics than anything else.  She’s made 6 queen sized quilts and dozens of wall hangings.
Mary Lou has taught at George Junior for the past 17 years.  Currently, she is teaching ESL, English, reading and special education math.  She quilts in the evenings, weekends and summers.  Her thought for us:  “Aren’t we lucky to have quilting in our lives?  Don’t you feel sorry for someone who looks at a quilt and just sees a blanket?”

July 2004

July Program:
1.Bobbi Dittman will talk about picture quilts.  Members are asked to bring their picture quilts even if they may have shown them before.
2.A Flea Market will be held.  Bring 1 or 2 pre-priced items of any kind.  (Also be prepared to purchase an item or two.)
3.For those attending the Sept. 25th Mystery Quilt Day  - you may pay your $15 at the  July or August meetings.

August Meeting:
At our picnic in August remember that two challenge blocks are due.  The face block  should be 11” x 17” portrait (meaning the block should be positioned longer than wider) and should be from shoulders up.  Word has it that some of us are stymied as to what to do for this challenge; so, the program committee will bring ideas for this to the June meeting.
The President’s block should also be turned in at the August meeting.
As in the past, you’ll be bringing a dish to share at the picnic.  Along with the dish bring 3 copies of your recipe so they can be sold.

Last Month:
Our program with Pat Knoechel was a good one. Thanks to all who attended and bought items.

Pat Knoechel, of Quilt In A Day and sister of Eleanor Burns, will be presenting a trunk show for our next meeting.
The presentation will take place in the New  Wilmington Presbyterian Church (next to the Westminster campus) at 7:00 p.m.
At our last meeting Chris asked that some other members bring some cookies to take care of the large number of people we expect.
Pat will have books for purchase, so bring money.  Bring a friend.
