Flower Pounding
Did you ever think you'd take a beautiful flower...and beat it with a hammer??!! That's just what we're going to do at the July meeting.  We will learn the technique of flower pounding and get rid of our aggression at the same time.  The guild will provide you with the fabric; you need to bring the following items:

hammer                 a few fresh flowers in different colors
masking tape       cutting board
old towel for under board thin black permanent marker

Mary M. Simmons

Mary, a charter member of the guild, started quilting in 1988.  She always was a sewer, but took a class specifically for quilting.  She has taken classes in paper piecing, basic applique, machine quilting, ribbon embroidery, water color, and applique with Ami Simms.  Her favorite classes were crazy quilt and  enlarging pictures to make a wall hanging.  She likes pieced quilts and traditional old favorites.
Mary's aunt has probably influenced her with velvet crazy quilts.  Her stash has a bit of everything including pattern books and several UFOs.  She has made 20 quilts plus 4 tops that were given to her and 5 wall hangings.
Mary is retired from Palmer Smith and quilts mostly in the evenings when she sets up the large frame in front of her TV.  She says that if she started quilting in the morning nothing else would get done.  Her advice for the guild is to do what you like, try something different occasionally and keep your seams even.

Machelle Scott

Machelle started quilting in 1981.  Some of her original quilting was self taught; however over the years she has taken many classes. Some of the classes were Star Log Cabin, Double Irish Chain, Flying Geese and the Sampler which was her first class and one of her favorites.  A favorite pattern is the Ohio Star, but there are so many that she likes that it's hard for her to choose just one.  She likes the simple "clean" looking patterns.
The people who have influenced her the most are a group of women who call themselves Nine Quilters Quilting.  She says, "They keep me inspired and motivated.  Over the last few years Where the Corners Meet have also challenged me with new ideas and projects."
Machelle's stash has everything in it.  She says that 22 years of quilting has provided many opportunities to collect material.  She has made 13 large quilts and a few lap quilts and wall hangings.  As a full-time teacher at Moniteau Senior High School she finds time to quilt evenings, weekends and summer.  She tries to quilt 3 or 4 nights a week even if it is only for 1 hour.
Her advice is to keep quilting and share your love of it with someone else.

August Program: Don't forget the challenge block is due at the August program.  Also, bring a favorite dish, table service and drink for the picnic.

FROM OUR PRESIDENT
Thanks to the entire June hostess committee for their work at the June meeting.  The food and drink was delicious and plentiful.  Everything looked great and was enjoyed by all.  Also, clean-up went fast due to the many helping hands.  Thank you!

What do you think? Would our guild be agreeable to changing to a
7 p.m. starting time?  Pat Knoechel made the comment that our guild was the latest starting guild on her tour.  That stimulated the thoughts about the possibility of starting earlier and getting home a little earlier even on those nights with longer programs. Give this idea some thought and be ready to discuss it at our July meeting.

Service Project: We will be making quilts for Children's Hospital this summer.  Our first work day is on Wednesday, July 9 at Trinity Presbyterian Church in Mercer from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.  Bring a brown bag lunch and a snack to share plus cutting mat and rotary cutter, your machine, fabric and sewing supplies.  The guild will provide drinks.  Quilts need to be at least 36" x36" or crib size, so, check your fabrics and simple patterns.  The church (110 East Market St.) is on the East side of the Courthouse on Rt. 58 on way to Grove City. Park out front or in the rear of the church. For more information call Jean Wanchick.

For those interested in helping but didn't sign up...we will be having a work day on a Saturday in August.  Sign up will be available at the next meeting.
