June Meeting  - June 28th

Program
Pat Knoechel will be presenting the program at 7 p.m. on June 28th at the New Wilmington Presbyterian Church.  Be sure to bring your friends and some cash to purchase one of Pat’s books (for new members, Pat doesn’t charge us for her presentation because we always purchase so much from her).

Last Month’s Program
Our thanks to Diana Russell for teaching us to make a chenille pillow.

June Hostesses
Peggy Sheehan, Linda Miller, Elaine Fisher, Sharon Gropp, Jean Wanchick. Due to the anticipated increase in attendance more hostesses are requested.  If you talked to Linda or Peggy about bringing food, please remember to help out..

July Meeting
Looking ahead to July, Terry Detzel from Meadville will be demonstrating the new Bernina 440 with the stitch regulator.  It is a wonderful machine that allows free motion quilting to become more “user friendly”.  Bring friends who might be interested in this demo.

July Hostesses
Ann Lepak, Bev Schiller, Pat Johnson, Mary Lou Townley

August Block Lotto

The theme for the August Block Lotto is “Animals”. The colors should be brights and the background for the block should be white or white on white.

General rules are:
1.  Blocks must be made from quilt shop quality fabrics and the fabrics must be prewashed.
2. Finished size of block must equal 12.5”.
3. No member can win the lotto more than once in a calendar year.
4. Once someone wins she must participate in the block lotto until the year ends.  This only makes it fair to everyone participating.
5. An individual receives a chance to win the lotto with every block she enters.  Enter 1 block get 1 chance, enter 3 blocks get 3 chances, etc.
6. Blocks will be turned in to a member of the program committee prior to the beginning of the meeting.
7. Remember—make this like you are making this for yourself or your best friend.  Blocks can be pieced or appliqued.
If you have questions call a member of the program committee.

Florida Quilt Guild  by Alice Ann Flack

While in Florida this winter I attended two meetings of the Manatee Patchworkers in Bradenton, Florida.  They have 150 members and hold a large quilt show every other year.  Their treasurer’s report showed asses to $16,000.  I guess they need that to put on the quilt show.
What a beehive of activity when you walk into their meeting.  There were about 100 members and 10 guests at the meetings and they are searching for a larger meeting place.  There are so many things going on, such as: sign in table, snack as soon as you get there, turn in challenge fabric, pick up raffle tickets, etc.
They arrive early and then some were smocking, embroidering or sewing while they wait for the meeting to start.
They have cottage groups within their guild.  They seem to have several retreats each year and they had a special Show and Tell from the retreat they had just had.
Putting on a large show requires a lot of time and money and each member is given 20 raffle tickets to sell for the quilt they will raffle at the show and expected to sell more after those.  They are asked to make 5 boutique items to sell and a small quilt for the silent auction and a challenge quilt for the show.
The thing I like best about their guild is a picture directory of the membership along with the addresses.  What I didn’t like was that they served the snack first and you had just finished dinner and weren’t hungry then.  They also had their Show and Tell the very last thing after the program and people were wanting to rush home.
An idea we could use was their Greeting Card Challenge creating a quilt the size of a fat quarter pertaining to any greeting card that you might buy.  Their plan is to photograph them and make them into greeting cards to sell.  We wouldn’t need to go that far, I just thought it would be a cute challenge.
I like our cozy smaller guild better.

For Sale:
Bernina 153 QE.  One year old.  One year warranty on all parts from time of purchase.  Computer programmed stitches can be interchanged on machine.  Feet include a quarter inch foot, walking foot and free motion foot plus many others.  It is a wonderful machine.  The only reason I’m selling is that I’ve purchased a Bernina 440 with a stitch regulator.  I will reduce my asking price to any guild member.  Call Jean Wanchick.

Mystery Quilt

Preparations: Shopping and Gathering Fabrics
Finished quilt size approximately 39” square
Block size 12”
Seam allowance 1/4”
The mystery looks best using blacks and brights.  Backgrounds are all solid black.  The brights can be solid brights, batiks, marbles, etc.  One of the brights needs to be a bright yello/gold.  There will be 4 other brights in the quilt and they can be your choice.  You can play with the brights if you like and come up with something a little different...like all warm brights or all cool brights.  Or you can even use from the same color family for your brights...such as all bright purples or all bright blues.  Fabric requirements are approximate, but should yield you a little more than necessary to be safe.

Since the June program is late in the month and the July meeting is on the regular day, the newsletter is being combined.  You won’t receive another newsletter until the end
of July for the August meeting.
