March 2003 Program - Tuesday, March 11th, 7:30 p.m.
In March we will be treated to a trunk show by the husband and wife team of Faye and Meryl Pitts. Guild member Marilyn Nebel has seen their presentation and reports that they are a true team: Meryl designs, cuts and sews while Faye hand quilts. Their quilts have been featured on National Quilting Association calendars. We hope you'll be able to join us to learn more about this interesting couple.
Scrap Bags: If you didn't attend February's meeting and want to finish your scrap bag, we will have directions for finishing it available. Also, Mary Ann will have extra tubing and sand if you would like to purchase more for additional scrap bags.
Challenge Block: The theme for the challenge block is "Hometown U.S.A." There are three pieces of fabric (available in a kit for $2) that must be used in the block Blue fabric is the background, Green is the grass and Yellow. This fabric has been washed.
Your block should have only one building in it, e.g. a house, church, school, barn, etc. You may use other fabrics to construct the building in your block but please make sure they are washed and 100% cotton-quilt- shop-quality. The finished block should measure 12 1/2". You may purchase the kits at the guild meeting. Blocks will be due in August.
Both of our featured quilters this month are charter members of the guild and have shared their work with us. Their creativity and technical skill is impressive.
Lynda Bortz
Lynda began quilting around 1986 when she took a pillow-making class in Grove City. While she has taken some applique, machine and hand quilting classes, she has created most of her work by using books and demonstrations. She loves scrap quilts but enjoys all kinds of quilts.
When asked who/what has influenced her quilting she responds that she is influenced by composition, color, technique and "just plain love of the quilt. Some quilts are so beautiful that I just want to enjoy their creativity."
I'd love to own or even just see Lynda's stash. Her fabrics are sorted into containers by color, smaller scraps are sorted by size for miniatures. She also sorts for particular projects and ones she just likes.
She has made about 15 full quilts and many smaller quilts, table runners, door quilts, quilted wearables, etc. Working full time at Grove City Community Library, Lynda makes time almost everyday to do piecing, handwork, quilting or just picking out fabric for quilts.
Lynda's tip to other quilters "If you learn only one thing from a class or demo it was worth the cost of the class. Often a small tip can save time and extra work."
Chris LaLumia
Chris began quilting in 1977. She learned to quilt by watching Georgia Bonesteel on PBS. She has taken very few classes; instead, she uses books, magazines, and friends to do new things. She gets lots of ideas from the many books she has. Star patterns are among her favorites and she enjoys working with pieced patterns. Recently Chris has started doing more applique. Fabric has influenced her quilting more than anything.
Her stash has a wide variety of colors in many hues. She likes jewel tones as well as primitives. She also tries to put some yellow into every quilt she makes. Her stash is unusual because she shares it with her two college-aged daughters who also quilt. They have different tastes in fabric, so there is a wide range of styles and types of fabric.
Chris is a teacher and sews every evening (except Mondays) for at least 15 minutes. She takes advantage of the 2 hour school delays or snow days and on the family vacations sews almost all day, every day. Chris' tip...make good friends with your local quilt store. "They can really help you with quilting ideas, or problemsor give you ideas for dinner!" An additional tip.. Join a small, 68 person quilt group. They can become a truly wonderful support.

The Art of Machine Piecing by Sally Collins
She recommends checking for accuracy each time you put two pieces of cloth together. For example if you are making a 9 patch with 2" squares in it and sew the first two blocks together multiply the number of blocks you sew together times the size of the blocks then add a half inch and that is the size your pieces should equal. (2 X 2" +1/2 = 4 1/2 ")
Historian
The historian takes photos of the projects members bring for show and tell. Take a look at the
albums from past years to see the beautiful projects our members have completed.
Where The Corners Meet Quilt Guild meets the second Tuesday of each month at 7:30 p.m. in the basement of the Sky Bank building in New Wilmington, PA.
