March Meeting -March 8th

Program
We welcome Susan Catanzarito to our guild in March.  Susan will present a program on the Underground Railroad Quilt. A member of the A.M. Where the Corners Meet Guild, Susan is a retired Home Economics teacher from Butler.  She presents programs on a variety of quilting topics and teaches classes at numerous locations in Western PA.

Library
At our February meeting we decided to have Janice select a group of the oldest books from our library which will be offered for sale to the members.  She will do this periodically throughout the year to decrease our library.

Quilts for Injured Soldiers
For those who wish to mail more quilts be sure they are at least 36”x36” (the soldiers like larger quilts to sleep under), any color, labels optional (To: An American Hero From: your name or guild name)  Email to RB395@aol.com  for mailing address.

Annual UFO Challenge
Once again you are challenged to put up or pay up….fill out a UFO Challenge sheet at the March meeting if you haven’t already done so.  Be brave and select a project to finish by November 8, 2005.  It can be anything -it doesn’t have to be a complete quilt  - it can be finishing piecing a top, or quilting something or just binding something.  Join the fun.

Block Lotto
The first Block Lotto block is due at the March meeting.  The block theme is Flowers.
  General rules are:

1.  Blocks must be made from quilt shop quality fabrics and the fabrics must be prewashed.
2. Finished size of block must equal 12.5”.
3. No member can win the lotto more than once in a calendar year.
4. Once someone wins she must participate in the block lotto until the year ends.  This only makes it fair to everyone participating.
5. An individual receives a chance to win the lotto with every block she enters.  Enter 1 block get 1 chance, enter 3 blocks get 3 chances.
6. Blocks will be turned in to a member of the program committee prior to the beginning of the meeting.
7. Remember—make this like you are making this for yourself or your best friend.  Blocks can be pieced or appliqued.
The next block will be due in June.
If you have questions call a member of the program committee.

Member Profile

New member, Beverly Schiller, has been quilting off and on for about 15 years.  Years ago she took the Giant Dalhia quilt class at the Quilting Bee.  Since then she has taken classes at Judy Shaffer’s and Sandy Lord’s shops.  She enjoyed the Stack & Whack class.
Beverly likes all kinds of quilts but enjoys appliqué and photo quilts.  The classes she has taken have influenced her as has her seamstress mother.  Beverly has lots of fat quarters in her stash.  She has made four quilts.
While no longer officially working outside the home, Beverly watches grandkids and teaches tole painting and One Stroke painting.  She quilts mostly evenings and Saturdays.

Mystery Quilt

Preparations: Shopping and Gathering Fabrics
Finished quilt size approximately 39” square
Block size 12”
Seam allowance 1/4”
The mystery looks best using blacks and brights.  Backgrounds are all solid black.  The brights can be solid brights, batiks, marbles, etc.  One of the brights needs to be a bright yello/gold.  There will be 4 other brights in the quilt and they can be your choice.  You can play with the brights if you like and come up with something a little different...like all warm brights or all cool brights.  Or you can even use from the same color family for your brights...such as all bright purples or all bright blues.  Fabric requirements are approximate, but should yield you a little more than necessary to be safe.
