Where The Corners Meet Quilt Guild

March 2006

March Program
We will be hosting guest speaker Alice Clapper at our March meeting.  Alice, a professional machine quilter, will talk about preparing your quilt for quilting (all types), squaring up the quilt, backing, batting, etc.
If you’re like me, squaring up is the hardest part of the whole process.  So, bring your questions and be prepared to learn some new hints and tips.

Welcome New Members
We are happy to welcome four new members to our guild.  They are:
Patti Burkhart, Stella Bell,
Kirsten Swanson and Amy
Howells.
A directory addendum page with these new member’s information will be available at the March meeting.

Last month
*Winners of the Valentine fat quarters were: Dottie Krest,Ann Hausser, Janet Orga,
Gale Court, Bette Moore, Mary Morell, Mary Lou Townley, and Joann Baranek.  We will look forward to seeing the products of your winnings.

Mary Morell, Mary Lou Townley  and Joanna Baranek.  We’ll look forward to seeing the results of their fabrics.

*Thanks to our own Claudia
Furlan for showing us how to make labels for our quilts last month.
I was highly impressed by
Claudia’s wonderful labels and her mastery of the whole process.
It certainly showed me that labels could be fun, beautiful and creative.  It also gave me some ideas for future labels of my own.

*Our sincere condolences to Chris LaLumia and her family on the death of her husband.

2006 Quilt Challenge
Make a greeting card quilt the size of a fat quarter, 18 x 22.
You may use any theme that would be an appropriate greeting, such as a birthday or holiday.
The quilt is to be completed and should have a sleeve so that you can use it as a wall hanging.
The challenge is due at the August picnic and a People's Choice Award will be given.
Personal Challenge
Don’t forget to sign up to have a some part of a UFO completed by the November meeting.

Request from Judy Miller...
If you have any blue and/or yellow fabric left from the stars you made for her president’s quilt she would appreciate you sharing some pieces with her. Judy  has decided to do an appliqued border on the quilt and needs fabrics that are in the stars to make it work best.

Focus On ...
Sharon Gropp
Sharon has been a member of our guild for a year or so...just about the time I had finished (I thought) spot-lighting our members.  So, I saved her answers to the questionnaire and here they are.
Sharon started quilting around 1980 taking her first beginners class in Grove City.  In the class she made pillows and practiced hand quilting on a frame.  After that, she followed directions in books.  Her first quilt was a Sampler and took her about 4 years to complete.  She was working at the time and it was all hand sewed.  She discovered that handquilting is her favorite part of the whole quilt process.
Sharon loves older quilts from the 20’s, 30’s and 40’s and her favorite pattern is the wedding ring.
Sharon’s mother-in-law, Dolores, has influenced her the most.  Dolores loves to applique and told Sharon how relaxing it was.  Dolores would take her quilt pieces with her on vacation to the beach.
We would find lots of odds and ends in Sharon’s stash.  She looks for old fabric at rummage sales, flea markets and yard sales.
She has made three quilts and two wall hangings and pillows.  She also has about 20 other quilts—some old, some new, some tops and some unfinished blocks that she has picked up.
Sharon quilts mostly in the winter and at night.  Her tip to others: only make quilt patterns you truly love.  That way you will finish it.
