Where The Corners Meet Quilt Guild

October 2004

October Program

Edith McGhee will be with us in October to present a program on the Bible in quilts.

Also on the program….it’s personal challenge time!  Remember to bring your project that you vowed to do in January.  If you can’t be at the meeting, arrange to have your project brought by another member.  If your challenge isn’t met, you owe the guild $5.

September’s Program
Thanks to everyone who helped the shopowners set up or take down their displays.  With everyone sharing the work load, it made the whole program run smoother.

Looking Ahead to November
Our November program will feature Carol Selepek, the machine quilter.  Bring things you’ve machine quilted and also projects you want to machine quilt.  Carol will help you work out various designs for your projects.

Calico and Chintz
The Butler Institute of American Art in Youngstown is exhibiting quilts from the Smithsonian.  The quilts date from 1810 to 1850.  Only 22 in number, they represent an amazing use of fabric that makes them almost abstract art.
  The show runs through
November 21st.  Call 330-743-1107 for details.

If you get information about events, shows, new shops, trips, etc. that would be of interest to our guild, please give Jean Wanchick the information for the newsletter.

The Gallery, the featured shop this month is owned by our member, Sandy Lord and her husband, Frank.
Located in Mercer on the Courthouse Square, the shop has featured gifts and framing; however, a year ago, Sandy decided to add fabric.  Today she has over 500 bolts of fabric, thread, books patterns and gifts.  The shop is bursting with beautiful quilts and projects just waiting to be taken home.
Each quilt shop has something that is unique about it.  The Gallery is unique for several reasons:  all fabrics and books are discounted, Sandy offers her original patterns and designs (check out her snowman, hydrangea, Christmas tree yo yo and Gladiola) there is a large amount of quilt –related gifts available including Jim Shore figurines.  Sandy has tried to offer a  line of fabrics differentfrom other area shops and has quite a large collection of specialty fabrics like cats, dogs, trains, airplanes, etc.
A feature unique to the shop is the sale of the Handi Quilter, a medium arm quilting machine.  It is handy because of its ability to be set up and taken down easily, it takes up a small amount of space but can handle all sizes of quilts.  The machine has a lazer, bobbin winder, frame, video and the newest and to me, most important feature, a stitch regulator.
Having just opened a classroom, Sandy has a full lineup of classes and teachers for fall.  Once a customer signs up for a class they are welcomed to use the classroom to stretch out and baste large quilts, use the light box and design wall or just come and sew when there is no class going on.  Sandy also emphasizes that the class is not over until the project is done.  So, if you’ve taken a class, she is still available to you for help and assistance until you finish your project.  That’s a great customer service.
If you haven’t already done so, stop in at The Gallery and see what Sandy has been up to...it will amaze you.
