October 2003 Program — Tuesday, October 14, 7:00 p.m.
Tricks and Treats will be the order of the night. We will have some fun with the tricks (quilting tips/tricks) and treats (food and a bag of fabric). Don’t forget to bring 36 to 40 pieces of fabric NO SMALLER than 6 and 1/2” square in spring pastel shades. The fabric should be washed and good quality. The fabric will be our challenge for April 2004 - to create a quilt out of the fabric (more information about this will be available at the meeting).
New Meeting Start Time: Don’t forget that our meetings are beginning at 7:00 p.m. instead of 7:30.
We got your opinion: At the Sept. meeting we had you fill out a questionnaire regarding the additional days of sewing. The results are: you ARE interested in participating in future sewing days; you would like to see these days scheduled 1 DAY EVERY OTHER MONTH; you would like to go to TRINITY CHURCH IN MERCER; times WEEKDAYS 9-3 AND SATURDAY 9-3; the purpose you would like is CHARITY, LEARN A SKILL AND FUN (ufo) PROJECTS; and the best day you say is MONDAY, WEDNESDAY, THURSDAY OR SATURDAY, the best evening MONDAY OR THURSDAY, the worst day and evening is TUESDAY. Thank you for giving us this feedback.
Christmas Dolls and Quilts: Small quilts and/or dolls/bears for the Salvation Army are due at the November meeting.
From the President: A very sincere “thank you” to our September hospitality committee. The snacks were wonderful and plentiful on Shop Owners’ Night. Also, the large drink containers left no one thirsty.
My thanks also to anyone who helped the owners set up or tear down. That was a LOT of work! Thank you.

Dottie Taylor
In the 1970’s Dottie began quilting - learning by trial and error. She has taken classes in machine quilting, sweat shirt and her favorite, machine piecing with octagons. She favors traditional piecing and applique. Her friends at the quilt guild have influenced her quilting.
We would find a lot of just about everything in her stash, but has no idea about how many quilts she has made. Dottie quilts whenever she can and tells us to quilt or sew whenever you can, if only for a few minutes.
Joanna Baranek
In 1993 Joanna had a small group of friends who quilt and walked her step by step through her first quilt. Since then she has taken classes in watercolor, stack - n - whack, hand and machine quilting, and a couple others here and there. Joanna is facinated with blocks that form secondary patterns across the quilt either by themselves or with alternate blocks.
Who has influenced her quilting? She can’t really pin it down to one person or thing because she is influenced by everyone and everything. “My guild buddies have been very helpful and inspire me to do more.” Her stash? “A horrible mish-mash, I’m afraid. Although I do lean towards brights and jewel tones in my purchases.” Joanna admits to making “bunches” of quilts in all sizes - she’s not sure how many since most of them are given away to new babies or new homeowners, etc.
Joanna works at Burdicks men’s store in Grove City doing alterations at times and fitting suits and tuxedos and selling at other times. She also has a hard time finding quilting time with an active child around, but she tries to quilt on her days off or when her son is engrossed in Playstation . Her tip to others: “You know those fabrics you bought because you loved them, but you hate to cut into them? Go ahead and use them, because then you can enjoy them everyday in a quilt, instead of just when you happen to run across them going through your stash.”
Shirley Martin
Shirley started quilting a long time ago when she learned by watching her mother and quilting with the ladies at the church. She’s taken classes in Sampler and Radiant Star and prefers traditional pieced patterns. Her mother and church friends have influenced her the most. Her stash contains a little bit of everything. Shirley has made 10 quilts and 8 wall hangings. She quilts at home any time and one morning a week at her church.

The Art of Machine Piecing by Sally Collins
She recommends checking for accuracy each time you put two pieces of cloth together. For example if you are making a 9 patch with 2” squares in it and sew the first two blocks together— multiply the number of blocks you sew together times the size of the blocks then add a half inch and that is the size your pieces should equal. (2 X 2” +1/2 = 4 1/2 “)
