September 2003 Program — Tuesday, September 9, 7:00 p.m.

Shopowners’ Night: The next guild meeting is the highly popular Shopowners’ Night.  This year 11 shopowners will be participating.  The program will be held in the New Wilmington Presbyterian Church, next to the Westminster campus.  Be prepared to see the latest in quilt ideas, see wonderful fabrics and patterns and show our appreciation by making some purchases.
A reminder to members who volunteered help shopowners set up at
6 p.m.  and/or stay after to help:  ...PLEASE HELP The Shopowners!
If you’re visiting a quilt shop in the next couple weeks, check to see if they are a participating shop and if they have their flyer up.  If they don’t have it on display, ask them to do so.  It brings them more customers.
  Bring friends!

We want your opinion:  At the Sept. meeting we will give you a questionnaire regarding the additional days of sewing.  We want to know if you want us to continue scheduling these, what days/evenings are better for you and what you would like to do at these.  Be prepared to share your thoughts and ideas with us.

New Meeting Start Time: Beginning with the September meeting, the guild will start meetings at 7:00 p.m. instead of 7:30.

October Program: Tricks and Treats   Be prepared for some fun at the October meeting.  The tricks will be quilting tricks and there will be treats of all kinds.  In addition,  bring 36 to 40 pieces of fabric no smaller than 6 1/2” square in spring pastel shades.  The fabric should be washed and be a good quality.
Christmas Dolls and Quilts: Small quilts and/or dolls/bears for the Salvation Army are due at the November meeting.

Quilting for Rachel: We’ve scheduled another sewing opportunity for making quilts for Children’s Hospital for an evening this time.  It is going to be on Tuesday, September 16 from 5 to 9 p.m.  Come when you are able, bring a brown bag lunch with you if you want.  It will be at Trinity Presbyterian Church in Mercer.

Our featured quilters this month are two sisters and their cousin.

Alice Ann Flack
Alice Ann began quilting as a child when her older sisters were making quilts.  She finished her childhood quilt when she was 40!  She learned by trial and error.  Her first quilt “didn’t win any ribbons.  I was just happy to say ‘There it is, it’s finished.’” says Alice Ann.  She favors traditional patterns and favorite classes include Old St. Nick, applique and sampler classes.
An aunt who made each of the girls a quilt influenced her the most.  She thought she would like to do the same thing.  She has made them for her sisters, nieces, nephews, their children and her grandchildren.
Alice Ann’s stash includes “bolts of 1/2 price Joann Fabrics” which prompts her to scheme about opening a fabric store herself.  With the amount of fabric she has it’s no wonder that she has made 30+ bed quilts and more than twice as many medium or crib sized.  She has about 10 tops ready to quilt.
Alice Ann is a retired bank teller and sometimes quilts 14 hours a day.   Her tip to others?  “Sign your quilts.  I also have an album of quilts I have made with notations about who I gave them to.”

Pepper McGarry
Pepper started about 50 years ago but finished her first quilt 25 years ago for a son’s wedding gift.  Her aunt started her making 4”
4 patches when she was five.  She still has those patches and others that she added when she was very young.  She plans to make something with those patches.  She likes traditional patterns and especially applique.  Her mother and three of her sisters all quilted and got her interested.
Mostly small prints of all colors can be found in Pepper’s stash.  She has made 8 large quilts and a few wall quilts.  She donated two quilts to the Poland Twp. Historical Society raffle.  Any time of the day or evening that she has a few minutes Pepper can be found sewing.  She quilts in her dining area by putting the table against one wall and the quilt frame against the other wall.  Her tip to others:  “Stick with it and you will get it done.”

Rose Spalla
A cousin of Alice Ann’s and Pepper’s, Rose started quilting at 8 years old, but never finished anything.  Her mother taught her to quilt and her mother and cousins, Alice Ann and Pepper influenced her.  She favors the flower garden and star patterns and has 100% washed and ironed cotton in her stash.
Rose hasn’t finished a quilt yet, but hopes that the quilt guild will give her the incentive she needs to do it.

The Art of Machine Piecing by Sally Collins
She recommends checking for accuracy each time you put two pieces of cloth together.  For example if you are making a 9 patch with 2” squares in it and sew the first two blocks together— multiply the number of blocks you sew together times the size of the blocks then add a half inch and that is the size your pieces should equal.  (2 X 2” +1/2 = 4 1/2 “)
